Thinking of taking a year out before or after university...?
Perhaps it's even time for that career break you've always planned...?
A Gap Year for mission with OM can be varied and could be both in the UK and abroad. We also cater for who only have six months or less as well as those seeking to serve somwhere the whole year in our Global Action Teams.
'Global Action' with OM means a year (or possibly just seven to eight months) of training and experience in mission, either in a multi-cultural environment here in the UK or abroad. There'll be plenty of opportunities to learn through team Bible studies, ministry training and 'on-the-job' experience of sharing your faith. You'll be part of an international team, another learning experience.
All of the listed options (UK or abroad) begin with OM's Global Orientation conference (10 days) in late August or mid-January. For those who can only give six to eight months, January is usually the preferred option.
"I can only give a few months... are there any opportunities for me?"
Yes, OM does have options for just 2-3 months. OM's Logos Hope ships has the Short-Term Exposure Programme (STEP) which is normally about ten weeks long. OM Moldova's 'Challenge into Missions' programme offers three months of training and mission experience, as does the Lifehope Community Encounter in the UK. There are also lots of shorter opportunities on 'Global Challenge', anything from one to six weeks on outreaches in the UK and almost anywhere else in the world. For more details see our Short-term opportunities page.
If you have questions or just want to talk about opportunities, call us on 01691 773388 and ask to speak to someone in the Personnel Depertment about GAP year opportunities - or email us at

Hope 2 Europe is a new programme spent in two European countries. Start with five months of training and experience with the Lifehope team in Birmingham, then spend three or six months in either Belgium, Finland, Italy, Sweden, or Switzerland. Transit Challenge is a seven-month missions experience, starting with three weeks of training in the UK, then a month working alongside local OM teams in 6 other European countries, travelling from country to country in a Transit minibus.
Other Gap Year options in Western Europe include:
- France - being part of a church-planting team in the Loire Valley or reaching out to North African Muslims in Paris.
- Switzerland - working among deprived communities in inner-city Zurich.
- Ireland - our team is active in church-planting, short-term missions and outreach to children and teens with the 'Big Red Bus'
Most teams in Central and Eastern Europe require a two-year commitment, but there are one-year options in Albania, Hungary and Moldova, where our teams work alongside national Christians in evangelistic ministry, youth and children's work.

Opportunities further afield include the Asia Challenge Team's year of training and experience in several South Asian countries.
After a three-week training programme here in the UK, you could join an evangelistic team in Pakistan, Nepal, Thailand or Burma (see www.act.om.org). In the course of the year, you'll probably work in two of those countries. Or you could spend the whole year in Nepal, trekking to mountain villages with Christian literature or in friendship evangelism among Hindus and Buddhists in the Kathmandu valley.

Gap Teams in the Middle East & North Africa |
|
We have several options in the Middle East & North Africa.
- You could spend your year on a travelling team in North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, etc.), making friends with North Africans and sharing your faith in Christ (N.B. this option depends on there being sufficient applicants to form a viable team).
- You can also spend a year in the Near East (Lebanon, Syria and Jordan) getting experience of Middle Eastern life & culture; if you are considering working or living anywhere in the Arab world in the future, this is an ideal starting place.
- There is similar scope in Egypt for study of Arabic, Egyptian culture & Islam along with a variety of opportunities for experience of Christian life and witness in the Muslim Arab World.
OM Turkey normally requires a two-year commitment but also have the one-year Global Action option for those considering longer-term service in Turkey after university. The programme includes training and ministry experience alongside longer-term staff.

In London, the Turning Point team is planting two churches among Muslims (mainly Arab and Turkish). If you have a heart to share your faith with Muslim people, here's a great opportunity to get training and experience.
The Lifehope team in Halesowen, near Birmingham, (www.lifehope.om.org) starts with an initial three-week training, then you'll join a church-based Community Encounter Team reaching out to the neighbourhood through kids and youth ministry, community projects, outreach to ethnic minorities, friendship evangelism, etc.
