Sabin* lives on the streets of urban Nepal. In the last five months he has become my friend. When we meet he is often in tears, usually drunk, and always foul-smelling.

I met Sabin while a group of friends and I were feeding homeless men, women, and children on the streets. Sabin had been hit by a car and had several broken ribs. We prayed for him and Jesus healed his ribs. Since then I have visited him every week and he has come to church with me.

 

A few weeks ago my friends and I decided to do something special for Sabin and other homeless men in our city. We went through our clothes and made piles of jackets, pants, shirts, and shoes that we no longer needed. Then we hit the streets and launched the “Homeless Fashion Show.”

 

We gathered a group of homeless men and dressed them in the clothes we brought. It was a fun night and each man left with several complete outfits. The Fashion Show drew a crowd of more than fifty curious onlookers, which gave us an opportunity to publicly explain that we love and serve the homeless people of Nepal because of how Jesus loved and served us.

 

I still visit Sabin every week, and now he is drunk less often, especially if I write down for him the next day I will come. Sabin forgets a lot of the things I say, but if I write them down he keeps the papers and reads them over and over. He has my phone number, some pictures of us together, and various reminder notes tucked into the cracks of the wall where he sleeps at night. I have also given Sabin pamphlets explaining the gospel, and he has tucked them away as well. I pray that as he reads, he will truly come to understand the meaning of the love and salvation that Jesus offers.
