We will be joining an OM missionary couple where they serve a friendly local evangelical church in a small mining town in the north of France. Regular outreach teams are a great encouragement to the pastor and the long-term couple. The goal is to persevere in bringing hope and joy to different segments of the population through the message of Jesus.

Bruay-la-Buissère is a small town in France with big problems. Alcoholism and teen pregnancy are high and employment levels are at a low. This old coal mining community is struggling to find identity and we want to share with them the message of life in Christ and how to find a community among believers.

Ministry Details

You can be a part of this small team bringing hope to a struggling community! There will be workshops to train you in the methods to be used during the week and to share the message of Jesus with the villagers. During the outreach we will meet for daily prayer, worship, and devotional times. Ministry activities with church members will run from Monday to Saturday. Ministry may include: Letter box distribution, door-to-door distribution, street outreach, almost certainly a kids club and outreach evenings. We are still working to fix the final programme! There will also be a day of rest and tourism.

Participant Profile

If one word could describe your profile, it would be HUMBLE, see participants profile Philippians 2:5-8. Are ready to serve your Maker in whatever way He requires of you? We are looking for participants with a servant-heart, ready to be taught by and used by God during this project. You need to be prepared to work as a part of a team. Your team will likely be multi-cultural, so you should be ready to adapt, and accept differences in others. Although not obligatory, knowledge of French would be an advantage, to help communication with the local church and contacts that we meet.

During the outreach you will be housed either at the church, or in church members homes. You may need to bring an inflatable mattress and bedding. We will confirm this in the last few weeks before the start.

We hope to be able to provide separate accommodation for couples and families depending on availability.

Most meals will be in the church or in church members’ homes. You should be prepared to help with meal preparation and clean-up.

You are responsible to book and pay for your own tickets to get to the Bethune train station in France.
You can fly to/from Paris (either CDG or Orly) and take the train to Béthune from Gare du Nord in Paris. The train ride is not long from Paris, but please allow ample time to get from the airport to Gare du Nord. (3-4 hours should be plenty). Please do not book flights unless you have received an acceptance email from the Short Term Missions team.

Participants should be in reasonably good health, ready for an intense week. Any special needs (food allergies, special diet, a good bed due to back problems, etc.) must be communicated as early as possible so that organisers can prepare to receive that person! Each participant should arrange personal medical insurance to cover the period of the outreach. It may get HOT in France in the summer! (32C/90F), please be prepared for this.

British citizens do not require a visa to enter France.

Individuals applying must be 18 or over.

Under 18s are welcome to apply but must have parental consent and be accompanied by a responsible adult. Children under 13 will be included on their parent’s application form. 13-17 year olds can apply using the relevant button at the bottom of the page.

Price excludes flights, insurance and is subject to change according to the exchange rate.

As part of our Safeguarding policy, you may require a valid enhanced DBS certificate which will cost an additional £20.
