We are looking for people who are interested in taking four months to develop their skills and experience as children’s workers. Participants in the Kids ‘n’ Things Academy will take part in professional children’s ministry in churches and primary schools whilst also receiving training in the theology, theory and skills required.

OM UK’s Kids ‘n’ Things ministry was established over 20 years ago, with the aim of presenting the Christian message to primary school age children in the UK. This has been done through two main types of outreach, using creative skills such as puppetry, drama, music, conjuring and storytelling. At Christmas and Easter, the team presents professional-quality theatre-style performances in primary schools, with the aim of clearly presenting the Christian meaning behind these important festivals. At other times of year, during school holidays, the team runs one-week children’s holiday clubs in partnership with churches across the UK. Kids ‘n’ Things programmes are seen by thousands of children each year, the majority of whom have no regular church involvement.

Ministry Details

The Kids ‘n’ Things Academy is a four-month programme. During this time, you will be part of a team creating, rehearsing and presenting creative children’s programmes with a clear Christian message. Depending on the season this may be in schools, in churches, or both. You will have the opportunity to develop your existing children’s ministry skills and learn new ones, whilst learning to operate and contribute as part of a team. You will also receive teaching in the theology and theory of children’s ministry, which will enable you to create your own children’s programmes and make your ministry more effective in the future.

Participant Profile

The Academy is designed for people who want to be trained and equipped as children’s workers.

  • You would like to create your own material and programmes for children, but don’t know how to start.
  • You have plenty of enthusiasm, but would like more structured training to build on what you already know.
  • You have some experience of working with children, especially in a church context. This would be useful but not essential.

You must have:

  • An ability to relate to children and a desire to help them discover God.
  • A willingness to grow and develop in your life, faith and teamwork skills.
  • Good spoken English.
  • Enough physical ability to kneel behind a stage and operate puppets, carry light equipment and take part in lively up-front activities in children’s programmes.
  • Documentation for a DBS safeguarding clearance.

Accommodation

During the majority of the time you will be staying in our Training Centre in Halesowen, near Birmingham, with other residents including students on our English language programme. It is possible that we may stay away overnight once or twice, in which case the churches we work with will provide accommodation.

Food

From Mondays to Fridays your meals will be cooked by OM staff. On Saturdays and Sundays you will need to buy and cook your own food. The cost of all food is included in the course fees. We need to know in advance of any special dietary needs (vegetarian, dairy-free, food allergies, gluten free, etc.)

Travel:

You need to arrange your own travel to Birmingham.

Health

Participants should be in average good health and able to walk a reasonable distance without difficulty. If you think this requirement rules you out, talk to us and we will see what adjustments we may be able to make for you.

Notes

*Price excludes travel to and from the outreach.

Applicants must be 18 or over.

OM UK is committed to safeguarding all those we work with.  As part of our Safeguarding policy, you will require a valid enhanced DBS certificate which will cost an additional £20.
